Does Humana Cover Telehealth?
- Humana Medicare Advantage plans cover telehealth the same way that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) does. Some Humana plans may cover additional services not offered by Original Medicare.
Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) plans like the ones sold by Humana are required to cover the same benefits as Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). This means Humana Medicare Advantage plans cover at least the same telehealth benefits as Medicare Part B. Some plans may also cover more telemedicine benefits than Original Medicare.
What Telehealth Services Does Humana Medicare Cover?
Humana Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage for all telehealth services that are covered by Original Medicare. Medicare Part B covers a number of Medicare telehealth services, including:
- Certain doctor’s office visits
- Physical and occupational therapy evaluations
- Speech therapy
- Therapeutic exercises
- Psychoanalysis
- Cardiac rehab
- Vision and hearing exams
- Self-care management training
- Medical nutrition counseling
- Diabetes management
- Depression screening
- Alcohol screening
- Obesity counseling
After December 31, 2024, some of the above services may not be covered by Medicare Part B unless you receive them at a doctor's office or medical facility in a rural area.
A complete list of telehealth services covered by Medicare (and therefore Humana Medicare Advantage plans) can be seen by downloading this “List of Telehealth Services for Calendar Year 2024” or by visiting CMS.gov, the official website of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Because Medicare Advantage plans are able to offer more benefits than Original Medicare, a Humana Medicare Advantage plan may be able to cover certain telehealth services that are not covered by Medicare Part B.
Humana provides more information about telehealth services that may be covered by some Humana Medicare Advantage plans.
Current Humana Medicare Advantage members are encouraged to call the number on their plan ID card for more information about which telehealth services are covered by their plan and how. Plan members may also log in to their online Humana account to review coverage.
Certain telehealth services may require a referral or prior authorization in order to be covered.
How Can Humana Telehealth Benefits Be Utilized?
Depending on which type of Medicare Advantage plan you have however, you may need to receive Humana telehealth doctor on demand from a network provider.
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans typically restrict members to seeing only providers that are part of Humana’s network of participating providers. PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans allow members to receive at least some coverage outside of the Humana network.
Humana telehealth services may be conducted in a variety of ways.
- Live video conferencing allows patients and providers to meet face-to-face in real time.
- Audio-only telehealth involves only the use of a telephone without any video.
- Remote patient monitoring involves the use of wearable technology, such as a pacemaker or blood sugar monitoring device, to track a patient’s data and communicate it back to their doctor.
- “Store-and-forward” telehealth involves pre-recording video or images to submit to a patient or provider.
- E-visits involve the use of a secure online patient portal where you can report symptoms and have your provider review and recommend treatment.
Patients may allow a friend, family member or caregiver to attend a telehealth appointment to assist with the technology if desired.
Does Humana Medigap Cover Telehealth?
Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap, plans do not directly cover telehealth. But what a Humana Medigap plan can do is cover some of the out-of-pocket expenses that may be incurred when using your Original Medicare telehealth benefits.
For example, receiving a telehealth service covered by Medicare Part B will require you to pay a coinsurance equal to 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. With a Humana Medigap plan, that coinsurance payment can be covered in full, and you may owe nothing for the visit if you already met your Part B deductible.
It’s important to note that Medicare Supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans are very different, and you can’t have both types of plan at the same time.
Does Humana Offer Other Remote Care Benefits?
Telehealth services are just one way to utilize Humana Medicare Advantage coverage from the comfort of your home or away from the doctor’s office. Some Humana Medicare Advantage plans may include some additional resources.
Humana Well Dine
The Humana Well Dine benefit delivers nutritious meals right to your front door. Plan members who have been recently discharged from a hospital or nursing facility can receive fully prepared meals designed by dietitians which can assist in the at-home recovery process.
Plan members with chronic conditions are also eligible for home-delivered meals that are specifically targeted toward managing and treating such conditions.
Humana Neighborhood Centers
A Humana Neighborhood Center offers a calendar of events, activities and special programs designed to promote physical and mental health among older adults.
Humana Home Care
Assistance with daily activities like bathing and dressing, palliative and hospice care, and same-day urgent care are just some of the at-home services available to qualified Humana Medicare Advantage beneficiaries.
Humana Telehealth App
The Humana Telehealth App used to schedule and meet with service providers is called Doctor on Demand. You can use this application on apple and android phones by downloading it and signing in with your service providers information.
