How Does the Kroger Prescription Club Work?
The Kroger Rx Savings Club is a fee-based members club. You pay membership dues once per year and receive discounts on covered medications.
Once you're enrolled in the club, you'll get a digital membership card immediately. Simply present this card to access discounted prices. Kroger will also mail a physical card to your address.
Where Can I Use the Kroger Prescription Discount?
The Rx Savings Club card is accepted at any of the 2,000+ pharmacies in the Kroger Co. family. Some of your options include pharmacies at grocery stores such as:
- Kroger
- Fred Meyer
- City Market
- King Soopers
- Ralphs
- Smith's Food and Drug
- Fry's
Keep in mind that Kroger Co. pharmacies in Washington don't participate in the Kroger prescription club, so you can't use the discount anywhere in the state. Pharmacies may not be available in all areas; you can find participating locations in the Kroger pharmacy directory.
Kroger Rx Savings Club Benefits
The primary benefit of the Kroger prescription plan is the discount you receive on medications. Members can even get certain drugs for free.
You'll get the biggest savings when you choose value-priced generic prescriptions. Kroger offers select common prescriptions in two pricing tiers.
The lower-priced drugs cost $3 for a 30-day supply and $6 for a 90-day supply. Medications in this category include Enalapril Maleate 2.5 mg or 5 mg tablets and Cetirizine HCL 1 mg/ml solution or 10 mg tablets.
Drugs in the higher-priced tier cost $6 for a 30-day supply and $12 for a 90-day supply. Some options in this category include Clobetasol 0.05% solution and Glipizide 5 mg or 10 mg tablets. Medication and dosage availability and pricing can change at any time.
In addition to value-priced drugs, the Kroger prescription plan offers discounts of up to 85% on thousands of other generic and name-brand medications.
Wondering if the membership is worth it? You can check the Rx Savings Club prices for your medications before you join.
What Types of Pet Medications Are Covered?
Typically, the Kroger discount applies to pet medications that are also used for people. It does not cover medications that are prescribed exclusively to animals or compound medications.
Before you can buy covered pet medications, you'll need a prescription from your veterinarian.
Kroger Prescription Memberships
Kroger offers both individual and family memberships for the Rx Savings Club. As of 2022, individual memberships are $36 per year.
Kroger Rx plan family memberships cost $72. This amount covers you and up to five other people. You can add family members, pets or friends to your family plan. This gives the Kroger club a competitive advantage on other discount prescription plans, which often limit family memberships to dependents and pets.
Kroger does not offer monthly payment plans. In many cases, your annual membership will renew automatically if you do not cancel before the payment date.
Who Is Eligible for the Kroger Rx Savings Club?
The Kroger Rx Savings Club is open to everyone in every state except Washington, including your pets. However, to be a primary account holder for an individual or family membership, you must be at least 18 years old. You do not need to have health insurance to become a member.
Is the Kroger Rx Savings Club Insurance?
The Kroger Rx Savings Club is not an insurance plan. However, you can become a member even if your current health insurance provides coverage for prescription drugs. Membership can't be used in combination with insurance, but it acts as a second option — in some cases, plan prices may be lower than your insurance copay. You can check prices for any given prescription and use whichever plan is cheaper.
Because you can't use the Savings Club membership and insurance at the same time, you can expect to pay out-of-pocket for the discounted price. Keep the receipts; some insurance companies let you submit them and receive reimbursements.
If you have a Health Savings Account or a Flexible Spending Account, you may be able to use it to pay for the discounted medications you buy with a Kroger Rx Savings Club membership. Check with your provider for details.
How Does the Kroger Prescription Plan Work With Medicare and Medicaid?
If you have Medicare, Medicaid or other government health insurance plans, you're free to purchase a Kroger Rx Savings Club membership. However, you may not combine the two for deeper discounts. The Kroger membership does not count as creditable coverage for Medicare Part D.
You typically can't use prescription drug coupons alongside a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, so be sure to compare all of your drug coverage options and speak with a licensed insurance agent who can help you better understand your potential benefits.
